Pack your curiosity and explore Labuan

Story and pix by Sharen Kaur
sharen.kaur@gmail.com

The Federal Territory of Labuan is an Island with an estimated population of  80,000 people.  Formerly known as Victoria, Labuan is a major town and port which faces the Brunei Bay.

Looking at statistics from the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, almost one million tourists visited Labuan in 2012 and 29 per cent or 271,183 were foreign visitors. This only means that tourism is still a small play in Labuan. But hopefully that would change soon with Visit Malaysia Year 2014 and tourism hitting a new high as more people flock to the island to discover its natural beauty!

Labuan - A great place for a pleasant getaway!
Having visited Labuan recently with a group of friends, we found a few reasons why the island can be a great tourism destination. Besides the clean air, attractive landscape, obedient and careful road users, and the exciting duty-free shopping, Labuan offers plenty of trills and mysteries, and good food, too!

Labuan is currently more popular among neighbouring Bruneians and wreck diving aficionados, thanks to the four identified ship wrecks near its shores namely Australian Wreck, American Wreck, Cement Wreck and Blue Water Wreck.

Based on published information, the Australian Wreck provides a very atmospheric dive thanks to the combination of the less than 10 meter visibility, rich coral growth, the skeletal remains of the ship, her tragic end and a reputation to be haunted. American Wreck has a rich and tragic history, having been capsized during the World War II era with the loss of nine lives. This journey back in time is complete with the sightings of bullet clips, depth chargers, wire bottles and canon artifacts still intact. The Cement Wreck is the shallowest wreck in Labuan with its super structure rising to 19m and the way it sits makes it the easiest to pass through and great for wreck diving training for beginners. The Cement Wreck also offers rare whale shark sightings to lucky divers. Blue Water Wreck is a large Philippines fishing trawler, which caught fire and sank in 1981. The completely intact vessel with masts lies on its side and is further enhanced by an abundance of marine life.

Accommodation
We learn't that Labuan has only 36 hotels with a total of 1,685 rooms with more under construction. The existing ones are mostly budget hotels, and those between the two and four star categories. Having heard great stories about Dorsett Grand Labuan, we decided to stay there for a few reasons, the key being that it is the only 5-star hotel on the island which can offer us comfort and luxury.

Dorsett Grand Labuan offers great view of the sea and it is also within walking distance to Labuan town, which we later found out is small enough to comfortably explore by foot. For sunset thrill, the distance between the hotel and the beach is only a few kilometers away.

                                                              (Sunset on Labuan Island)

Other attractions within walking distance from the hotel include the ferry terminal which can take you to both Brunei and Kota Kinabalu; textile shopping and duty-free shops. Duty-free shopping is one of Labuan's well known attractions. Items that are reasonably cheap include pearl and crystals, alcohol, tobacco and chocolate. People from all walks of life flock to the town for these goodies.

Since there were three of us we stayed in the Premier Suite, furnished in walnut wood with beige tones. The Premier Suite comprises a master bedroom with a king-size bed, a dining area with kitchenette and an adjoining living room. The room was both spacious and comfortable and there were times we didn't even want to leave the place to explore the outside world. The view? Both magnificent and glamorous!

Exploring the island's beauty
Labuan comprises of Labuan island along with six other smaller islands  namely, Pulau Burung, Pulau Daat, Pulau Kuraman, Pulau Papan, Pulau Rusukan Kecil, and Pulau Rusukan Besar. World class sport fishing is the main activity on these islands, besides snorkelling and water sports.

We decided to turn adventurous and took a boat ride, courtesy of Dorsett Grand Labuan, to explore the islands. The blue clear water around these idyllic islands is home to one of the world's richest coral and fishing grounds which offers unlimited deep sea tackling and coastal table-fish catches. As the Pearl of South China Sea, we found that Labuan has beautiful stretches of beaches. The famous ones are Batu Manikar, Pancur Hitam and Layang-layangan beach where the locals hang out and have a BBQ picnic during the weekend.

(View from Labuan's only Golf Course)

We also found that most of the island's prime land, waterfront and suburbs are used for residential and tourism development with beautiful architecture and landscape.  The south western side of Labuan is utilised by shipbuilding, manufacturing and oil and gas industries, being the main activities on the island.

Historial sites
Dorsett Grand Labuan offers plenty of tourism activities which takes you to interesting places such as the Japanese Surrender Point, The Chimney, Water Village (Kampung Air) and World War II Memorial.

(The 106 feet Chimney)              (View from the inside up)

According to the hotel's General Manager Alfred Paulsen, The Chimney is an artifact from Labuan's coal mining era between 1847 and 1912. "It is a 106 feet high red brick structure and Labuan's most well-known landmark. The actual purpose of it is still a mystery although many believe it served as a ventilation shaft. There are various stories but nothing can be confirmed," he said.

The World War II Memorial is Malaysia's largest war grave. Some 3,908 soldiers mostly Australians, British and Indian are buried there. A memorial service is held on Remembrance Day every year.

                                                         (The World War 11 Memorial)

The Water Village, meanwhile, comprises of two main villages known as Kampung Bebuloh and Kampung Patau-Patau. The residents are mainly Brunei Malay. The wooden houses are built on stilts over water and are connected to each other.

The Japanese Surrender Point is located at Layang-Layangan. This is where the 37th Japanese Southern Army surrendered to the 9th Division Australian Imperial Forces on 9th September 1945 which led to the end of WWII in Borneo.

                                                        (The Japanese Surrender Point)

It is also in this area that South East Asia's first war crime trials were conducted. Peace Park is located nearby the Japanese Surrender Point. This beautiful landscaped park was built as a memorial and renunciation of the horrors of war. A huge man-made mound is the focal point and there is a plaque signifying the renunciation of war.

Food indulgence
There are many cafes and restaurants in Labuan that offer good food, and value for money, too! But fret not if you get too lazy to travel outdoors for dinner after a long and tiring day as Dorsett Grand Labuan has a restaurant called Victoria's Brasserie, which will surely whet your appetite!

(Victoria's Brasserie:Pix courtesy of Dorsett Grand Labuan)

Victoria's Brasserie offers all-day dining of delectable local and international cuisines, at affordable prices! The daily themed Buffet Dinner is a must have especially when its BBQ night. The restaurant will also be a winner for those with a sweet tooth as the desserts, comprising homemade cakes, pastries, ice creams and cookies, among others, are worth it!

For a relaxing night, head on to the hotel's Fun Pub to shoot a few rounds of pool over a few drinks, while enjoying the performances of the resident live band.

Revenge of the Bat - Die Fledermaus

By Sharen Kaur

The new production of Revenge of the Bat (Die Fledermaus) was a winning match for Co-Opera’s unique, vivacious and irreverent style. I was awed by the amazing performance of the stage members and the orchestra. Sung and spoken in English, the production is staged in the glamorous high society of the 1920, with settings of a typical Australian home.

Dorsett Grand Subang, managed by Dorsett Hospitality International, together with Showtime Asia as the co-producer, presented the gala charity musical comedy at the Grand Selangor Ballroom here recently.

The two-hour plus show was amazing. With a set dressed only in a few pieces of furniture and simple costumes, audience were captivated with the humorous performances. Both the orchestra and the cast excelled in these regards.

To recap the production, the prologue of the musical tells the story of Dr Falke, in pursuing his revenge, plays on the weaknesses of his friends, Gabriel Eisenstein for a “good time”, Rosalinde for a flash new dress, Adele for fame and fortune.

Gabriel Eisenstein is supposed to go to prison for punching a policeman but is persuaded instead to go to Prince Orlovsky’s party disguised as a French nobleman. His wife Rosalinde is enticed to the same Ball with the lure of a new exotic dress and the intrigue of masquerading as a Hungarian Countess. Rosalinde recognises her husband but he falls in love not knowing it’s with his own wife.

Their maid, Adele, also arrives at the Ball pretending to be a famous actress, dressed impressively in one of Rosalinde’s gowns.

Mayhem ensues. The various masks are eventually removed and reality hits home.....but not before the effects of too much champagne lulls everyone into dreamy reminiscences, delivered through Strauss’ ingenious chorus writing, some of the loveliest in all music for the theatre. Even Rosalinde softens her contempt for her philandering husband as they find a new affection for each other.

Finally the ex-patriot Russian Prince Orlovsky’s motto prevails..."Chacun a son gout"... [each to his own]...and Adele is rescued from servitude with the promise of becoming a “truly famous actress”, whilst Champagne is blamed for all misfortunes.

This is the first time the musical was staged in Malaysia, with its 11 cast members and 9 members creative team.

Since its first premiere in 1874, Die Fledermaus has received global theatrical ‘full-house’ respond whenever the musical is staged.

The Musical Comedy is directed by Frank Ford AM, a writer, director & dramatist.  Having written and directed opera, music theatre, cabaret, experimental theatre, modern and classic drama and multi-media productions, his works have been performed in Australia and overseas & received the inaugural Premier’s “Lifetime Achievement” Ruby Award for the performing Arts.

Brian Chatterton OAM as the musical director of “Die Fledermaus, has been the Musical Director of Co-Opera since its inception in 1990. He was Director of Elder Conservatorium and Dean of Performing Arts at the University of Adelaide. Chatterton has led Co-Opera in over 30 performances in SE Asia and/or Europe.

Datin Jasmine Abdullah Heng, the Vice Chairman of Dorsett Hospitality International (DHI) and the Board of Director of the Kiwanis Club of Bukit Kiara, said, DHI's objective to collaborate with Show Time Asia to bring the musical comedy here is to support the performing art for the cultural enrichment of the communities.

It is also to raise funds for the Kiwanis Club of Bukit Kiara, she said.

Tickets for the show were priced at RM110, RM220, RM330 and RM440 each and more than 300 people attended the evening.

Chappati.com ready to cook up a storm in Malaysia

Published in Business Times, NST on April 3, 2013

For Restaurant Chappati.com, which is based in Petaling Jaya, the concept of serving authentic Indian cuisine, and Western-Indian flavoured dishes, has brought it huge success.

NORTHERN Indian-inspired fusion restaurants are mushrooming in every major city in the country today.

With fancy cross-culture decors and innovative menus, these restaurants are bringing modern twists to Indian cuisine, in a bid to attract increased clientele from all walks of life.

This contemporary Northern Indian restaurant is owned by The Restaurant Chappatidotcom Group - recently founded by four entreprenuers namely Sunil Sachdev, Updesh Gill and her sons, Harry and Sanjit Sidhu.

Combined, the founders have almost 40 years of experience in the food and beverage, and entertainment industries - Sunil through Classic Floral Services and Updesh via Hasheel Sidhu Services.

A substantial amount has been invested in the outlet and they are expecting to break even on its initial investment within its first year of operation, says Updesh.

Restaurant Chappati.com combines a modern decor with Indian flavours.

The interior design is drawn from a mix of cultures, dressed in hues of colours.

Updesh said the key highlights of the restaurant includes tandoori items, Indian curries and bread, kebabs, pizzas and pastas.

"We have more than 200 items on the menu that includes a variety of cuisine from Northern Indian, fusion and Western favourites, as well as local delights.

"The idea is to offer food for just about anybody," Updesh told Business Times in an interview recently.

Updesh said the challenge in Northern Indian cuisine is making people understand that the food is not all about being greasy and spicy, but is healthy to an extent because of the variety of spices used.

Sunil, meanwhile, believes the key to a successful restaurant is its service, speed, quality and consistency of the food, and cleanliness. The group will continue to invest to ensure that it operates under a certain standard.

"We are inspired to establish Chappati.com as a brand in the likes of AirAsia, Maybank and Nestle.

"These are all brands that have crossed international borders to become known throughout the world," Sunil said.

Sunil added that the group is aiming to strengthen its presence in Malaysia as well as gain a foothold in several other countries.

"We plan to expand our operations abroad over the next two years.

"We are targeting Singapore, Thailand, Australia, Indonesia (Bali) and the Middle East (Dubai) under the first phase of expansion," he said.

Sunil said the group is also planning to set up convention centres in the Klang Valley starting this year, featuring the Chappati.com brand.

Restaurant Chappati.Com - It was more than just a grand opening!

Story by Sharen Kaur

It was supposed to be an ordinary outlet opening for Restaurant Chappati.Com but what made the event more than just prestigious and memorable were the number of VIPs (very important people) who had braved the evening traffic to show their support.

                                                                      Red Carpet Nite

As soon as the clock ticked 7.30pm, there was a sudden flow of VIPs and well known industry players. They included Dato' Howard Choo - director of Brahim's Holdings Bhd; Kanesan Veluppillai - the new chief executive officer of Scomi Engineering Bhd; Datuk Viswananthan Menon - CEO of Weststar Group; Tan Sri Ravindran Menon of Subang Skypark; Dato' Mohamad Salim Fateh Din of Gapurna Group and soon to be group managing director of Malaysian Resources Corp Bhd (MRCB); as well as Dato' Rahadian Mahmud - CEO of Magna Prima Bhd. There were also members of the Pahang Royalty and Badri Ibrahim from SPAD.

Among the VIPs were some 80-odd other invited guests. Their arrival was just perfect because as soon as they were seated comfortably in the cool atmosphere, Chappati.Com wasted no time to entertain them with a few dance numbers, with special performance by a Malaysian Bhangra group. Following that was the launch by the founders themselves.

Founders (L-R) - Sanjit, Harry, Madam Updesh, Sunil

Soon after, all the invited guests were treated to a sumptuous spread of Northern Indian cuisine and western food, with lip smacking Indian desserts.

                                                                   The sumptuous spread

Badri (from SPAD), upon a special request, sang a number (Sway by Dean martin) much to the delight of the crowd, or his "fans", ranging from as young as 18 months to 76 years old.

                                                           Badri Ibrahim singing to Sway

But that was not the finale as what followed after dinner and his performance was a hilarious act by the MC himself. Yes!....there was Oppa Bhangra Style with the founders and their family members dancing to the tune, showcasing their respective talent. Not to forget a bit of "joget and some Hindi dance numbers!

And yes, they all managed to entertain those who stayed on until the wee hours of the morning!

Restaurant Chappati.Com opens up in Malaysia

Story and photos by Sharen Kaur
sharen.kaur@gmail.com

India, with a population of over one billion, has rich and varied culinary traditions, which can be generally divided into four regional cuisines, with Northern Indian food standing out distinctly from the rest.

One of the main differences between Northern Indian cuisine and Southern Indian food is the staple food itself. Wheat is the staple food of Northern India, and rice is the staple food in Southern India.

The Southern Indians consume more rice, vegetables and seafood and they use coconut for some of their dishes. Rice is often mixed with lentils to make idlis, dosas, and uttapams. The Southern Indian food also consists of lemon rice, biryani, tamarind rice, sambhar and rasam.

Northern Indian food is influenced by the Mughlai cuisine. It encompasses the culinary traditions of the various northern states, including Punjabi, Awadh, Kashmiri, Marwari, Rajasthani, Gharwal, and Pahari. In case you did not already know, Tandoori cuisine originates from the north.

The most essential elements when it comes to Northern Indian cuisine are the spices - turmeric, cumin, black and green cardamom, coriander, cinnamon, cloves, saffron, nutmeg, black and yellow mustard seeds, fennel, asafoetida, fenugreek, tamarind, curry leaves, sweet bay and mint - employing some of the most aromatic scent, especially during the cooking process. In addition to adding luscious flavours and attractive aromas, the spices are known for their food preservation and medicinal properties. Garam masala, a spice mixture comprising raw cardamom seeds, cinnamon, cloves, and black pepper is also commonly used in Northern Indian cooking.

                                                                Garam Masala mix

When it comes to breads, there are various types from chapattis, roti, naan, parantha and tandoori-style. Ghee, or clarified butter, is particularly important to the flavour of Northern Indian cuisine and is not only used in the cooking process but also spread across the many types of bread available. For instance a chapatti won't taste as good if no ghee is added to the dough or spread on the bread just before it is completely cooked.

In recent years in Malaysia several authentic Northern Indian restaurants have mushroomed, thanks to the overwhelming support and demand from the general public. While the Punjabis enjoy having simple meals like chapattis with dhal (lentil) and mixed vegetables, and perhaps even murgh masala (chicken), others are also favouring it. To a large extend Punjabi food has become so popular that it is high in demand.

To satisfy the growing needs for authentic Punjabi cuisine, four business people decided recently to open up a place called Restaurant Chappati.Com at Jalan Kemajuan in Petaling Jaya, an area which is vibrant and where there is a lot of action. The four include siblings Harmesh @ Harry and Sanjit, and their mother from Hasheel Sidhu, a company which has been in the entertainment industry for more than two decades, and Sunil Sachdev from Classic Floral Services, an event planner and decorator. Restaurant Chappati.Com may seem like a new kid on the block but the experience the founders have easily spans over 20 years combined.

                                                            Restaurant Chappati.Com
Restaurant Chappati.Com is officially opening on February 13, 2013 and already there is so much hype about the place. Those who have not heard, the restaurant is going to open with a loud bang, with multi-cultural performances, a large line-up of VIPs (very important people), and most importantly, great food.

I was given the honour to do a food tasting recently to experience the cuisine and was truly amazed with what the place had to offer. I have done food tasting for 10 years and reviewed several Northern Indian restaurants in the Klang Valley but Chappati.Com was truly amazing and topped my list of perfect places to go to. What started as a simple food tasting turned out to be a great gastronomically affair for me and those in attendance, numbering around 50.

As a start, we were given hot onion bhajis, assorted vegetable pakora, dahi kebab, chicken 65 and mutton kebab which ended up with me, and others seated at my table wanting more. All these mouth-watering delicacies were served with spicy chutney that included a combination of garlic cloves, mint leaves, salt and green chillies. Onion bhajis are a delicious deep fry spicy snack usually eaten with raita or chutney. They are so crunchy and absolutely tasty when dipped into the spicy chutney while it is still hot.

                                                                       Onion Bhaji

The assorted vegetable pakora featuring eggplant, potato, spinach and chilli fritter, is also another great dish to have while mingling with family and friends before your main meal.

                                                            Assorted Vegetable Pakora

A great way to have this is with mango lassi (a popular and traditional yogurt-based drink) and we had very good ones at Chappati.Com. Well I can't really say what was inside the mango lassi as it is all meant to be a secret ingredient. All that you need to know is that the mango lassi was refreshing, smooth, creamy, and absolutely heavenly. You also have to sample the Apple Juice and Orange Juice which are equally thirst quenching.

Mango Lassi

Refreshing Apple Juice

                                                                     Orange Juice

Dahi Kebab was unique for me as I have never eaten it before at any Northern Indian restaurants in Malaysia. The first time I had it was during a recent trip to Mumbai where we were pampered to authentic Northern Indian cuisine at one of the finest restaurants in the town centre. This alone makes Chappati.Com a very special place to experience good food as you would get what you may not find out there, in true authentic style.
                                                                       Dahi Kebab

According to the chef (Chappati.Com has a few chefs flown in from India), it is basically soft tasty vegetarian kebabs made from hung curd and cheese with the crunchiness of onions and the flavours of ginger and pepper. It is so good you just have to try it!

Chicken 65 is a spicy, deep-fried chicken dish that may be ordinary to most people as it is a very popular starter in all Non-Veg restaurants. The one served at Chappati.Com came very soft and juicy. Every mouth was flavourful! If you want to enjoy it further, have it while it is still hot and with a cup of masala chai (tea). At least that was how I enjoyed it!

                                                                        Chicken 65

A starter that will surely tempt you to come back for more is the mutton kebab. You won't think twice before calling in for the kebabs when seated at your table. Mince mutton mixed with onions, garlic, chillies and spices form this delicious kebab and the side condiment is chutney. Have this with a glass of red wine and it will surely make your day. While it may sound strange to you I found the combination of the mutton kebab and the red wine to be amazing. If this is tempting you by now, read on.

                                                                      Mutton Kebab

Chappati.Com serves not just authentic Northern Indian cuisine but fusion and western food as well and this is where it gets famous for its pastas and pizzas. Starting with the pizzas, we were served vegetarian flavours and they were all so good to the brim. The pizzas were cheesy, had great texture and reasonable ingredients. Well that is my humble opinion and it will be an amazing experience for you as it was for me.

                                                              Cheesy Vegetarian Pizza

The tomato basil penne pasta (pasta with cylinder-shaped pieces) is another excellent choice. Since I was so full all I could take was two or three spoons and each bite just exploded in my mouth with multiple flavours. To tell you the truth, the pasta dish was made to perfection. It was not salty and neither did it lack anything at all. It was so right in flavour!

                                                            Tomato Basil Penne Pasta

There were so many more dishes that we tried that evening like butter chicken, a variety of soups such as tomato, sweet corn and sweet and sour, as well as chicken bryani. There is so much to say about the soups and the bryani but i would like to say it all in one word - fabulous! You have to try them to know what I mean. Its an acquired taste for some.

                                                                    Tomato Soup

                                                                  Sweet Corn Soup

                                                                Sweet and Sour Soup

                                                                     Butter Chicken

And the desserts here, are simply lip-smacking!

                                                                   The tray of desserts

There was something that I noticed at Chappati.Com and that is the amount of ingredients, including spices that they add into each dish making them all so rich. It seems that they do not compromise on the use of spices in their cooking despite how expensive they are. That is good to know as it means there is great quality and care in the preparation of the food. Diners would find every cent they spend to be worth it.
In cooking, photography and flower decoration, there must be patience and passion. There must be a sense of joy in what you do as at the end of the day it is the customer who must and should benefit. While Hasheel Sidhu and Classic Floral Services in reality make sure that every event they organise lives a lasting impression, they do the same at Restaurant Chappati.Com. For them, every customer is part of Chappati.Com. Customers don’t just patronise the restaurant but they make it "the place" to be with their friends, families and business associates.

To conclude, there is nothing nobler or more admirable than when four people come together to establish a good marriage of Northern Indian cuisine.
